In a decanting system, two compartments are clearly distinguished:<\/p>\n
-Sedimentation zone.<\/p>\n
-Digestion zone.<\/p>\n
The sedimented suspended solids are retained in the sedimentation compartment and are decanted to the digestion zone at the bottom of the pit. The special geometry of the sedimentation zone facilitates rapid decanting. At the bottom, the organic matter in an anaerobic environment is digested in the process called methane fermentation, stabilising the primary sludge.<\/p>\n
